The Ultimates Comic: Inspiration for The Avengers Movie

A shortened version of the Avengers Trailer that plays at the end of Captain America has been released on Yahoo! Movies. Screenshots can be found at Superherohype. With that we've gotten our first actual look at scenes from the upcoming Avengers movie. Coupled with the 7 Avengers character posters that Marvel has released, I must say I'm really liking the look of things to come.

But before all this, there was a comic book series called "The Ultimates". Created by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch as a brand new take on the Avengers, set in a more realistic world. With Hitch's "cinematic" panels and layout,  it provided many comic book readers a glimpse of what an Avengers movie might actually look like. I highly recommend anyone who hasn't read it to do so.

Well with the images from the Avengers trailer and poster, lets just see how many of the characters were influenced by their Ultimates counterparts.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)

When I first read "The Ultimates", one of the coolest things was that they modelled Nick Fury after Samuel L. Jackson. Hitch and Millar were geniuses, Sam Jackson is the badass of our generation. Ultimates came out in 2002, and 6 years later, Sam Jackson appears as Nick Fury in Iron Man. It was a dream come true.

Steve Rogers / Captain America (Chris Evans)

Captain America loses the helmet he sported in his movie, for more a more traditional superhero headpiece. After reading the Ultimates, I realised that Captain America could do without the little wings on his head, and still look good.

Tony Stark / Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)

In the trailer, Iron man is shown with the Mark VI armour, the one with the inverted triangle on his chestpiece. However, in the Iron Man poster, he's shown as wearing an armour that more closely resembles the Mark IV, but with noticeably bigger shoulders like War Machine. Which one will be used in the movie? My guess is it could be both.

Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth)

Thor is sporting a new sleeveless look in the Avengers, though at the end of the trailer, you'll see he has his red cape on. I'm not sure whether which way they're going to go, but capeless like Ultimate Thor, is just fine with me.

Bruce Banner / Hulk (Mark Ruffalo)

The only Avenger we haven't seen in any of the Marvel movies yet, is Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner. Let's hope his Hulk looks better Edward Norton's Hulk. I thought that one looked fake and worse than the one Eric Bana's Hulk (I'll post more on this next time).

Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson)

Black Widow is sporting shorter tresses now than she did in Iron Man 2. Which makes her look Ultimate Black Widow. And makes sense too, who fights with such long hair that could obscure your vision? (Unless you're Thor I guess)

Clint Barton / Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner)

Hawkeye is the 2nd character with the most obvious influence from the comics. Hawkeye's movie costume is almost identically to Ultimate Hawkeye's costume. You can go to Marvel's website to check out the full Hawkeye poster, as I cropped it quite a bit to match the picture I took from the comics.

In the end what can I say, but a big "Thank You" to both Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch, you've really made my Marvel!
